History Project

The Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center Collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.

The Project collects first-hand accounts of U.S. Veterans from the following wars:

  • World War I (1914-1920)

  • World War II (1939-1946)

  • Korean War (1950-1955)

  • Vietnam War (1961-1975)

  • Persian Gulf War (1990-1995) 

  • Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts (2001-present)

The Library of Congress Veterans History Project 

Our Stories

The landmark federal statue- H.R. 2965 § 4023,  enacted the process for ending the U.S. Policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell 10 U.S.C. § 654 and paved the way for LGBT Americans to serve openly.

LGBT Vets

Shadows No More - LGBT Veterans History Project and the mission to capture the largest collection of LGBT Veterans Stories is born. The documentary will follow,  Navy Veteran Christopher Landavazo and his film crew as they film and document the 1st stories of LGBT veterans and key members who helped to repeal the DADT policy.
